Five Characters in Search of Susan
Review of the last live comedy show I saw…
Five Characters in Search of Susan is an energetic hour of character comedy written and performed by character comic Susan Harrison. It’s a much darker and more bizarre show than I was expecting but all the better for that fact. I like my comedy quite broad and there were moments which I felt could have been edited a bit, as they were a bit wordy, but on the whole I thought the show was really brilliant. The show consists of five characters who range from a bubbly theatre usher called Shakira to a bitter theatre critic, to a bear therapist to a mermaid in a wheelchair. I must admit I (and the rest of the audience) definitely weren’t expecting that last one! There’s also another character called Jennie Benton Smith who is a really young rapper from Tunbridge Wells. This character has a medical condition called cardiomyopathy which she talks about and she’s also a lover of maths and science. I’ve since looked for her stuff on YouTube and there are lots of videos of her which are also very funny. Looks like she’s got a bit of a following! Jennie Benton Smith is a silly and very sweet character. As well as all the silliness and the bizarre moments there were other moments in Five Characters in Search of Susan that were more downbeat and almost quite poignant. I was surprised to feel sorry for the bubbly theatre usher Shakira as she was quite brash at first, but still I did sympathise with her story. This was a nice twist and it’s quite refreshing to see comedy characters that you care about. This was definitely an original, multi-layered comedy show and I’d be interested to see the follow up.
