Comedy Review: Guess Who

July 30th, 2010 posted by admin

This movie stars Bernie Mac, Ashton Kutcher and Zoe Saldana. It is a comedic version of the original Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner staring Sidney Portier. The original involved a very dramatic take on a white family who’s daughter brings home the black man that she intends to marry. Considering the time period, it was very controversial. The movie Guess Who reverses the roles in which Zoe Saldana brings the very white, Ashton Kutcher, home to meet her parents to announce their engagement. Not only does it portray a father that doesn’t care for the color of his daughter’s boyfriend, he’s also having a hard time thinking of her as a grown woman and all that entails.

Funny and these male actors go hand and hand. While the topic isn’t amusing, the twist of the whole situation is. Bernie Mac, of course is his usual entertaining and loud self. He’s a very “proud black man”. The interesting thing about this entire situation is that Bernie Mac and his wife are a upper middle class family while Kutcher is just scraping by and living with Zoe Saldana. There is a constant banter back and forth between the male main characters that any father or potential son-in-law can relate to. There is also a great deal of testosterone overload that any daughter and potential bride can confess to.

Overall Guess Who is light, funny and entertaining with some elements of Spontaneity thrown in. If you’re looking for something to make you laugh hysterically with a few tears thrown in, then this is for you. It deals with the very real issue of racism while keeping to the storyline of a lighthearted, comedic, romance that warms your heart. If you haven’t seen this movie yet then rent it or find it online and have a good laugh. Enjoy one of Zoe Saldana’s movies before she was a star in Avatar.
