What are some Common Methods of Engraving Glass?

Engraving glass requires a tool that abrades the surface of the glass in order to leave a lasting impression and mark. There are complex machines that allows glass engravers to achieve this task mechanically, without requiring much skill or expertise at all, and then there are the more traditional methods of engraving glass that require a lot of practice.
Mastering the use of a diamond-point hand tool is not simple, and it is a task made much more difficult when working with something like glass — it breaks easy, a single mistake will ruin the piece, and the designs are incredibly complex sometimes. Think of it as tattooing glass, and you get an idea, but unlike tattooing flesh, engraved glasses have depth of the marks made, and the design must be flawless so that it is held up to the light, just the right depth and marks made be made. Point engraving uses either a tungsten carbide or diamond point, scratches the glass, and makes a white line that will sparkle in the light. You’ll need a machine to do it, so you’ve got the extra problem of the vibrations, but it does allow for a much more consistent finish to the glass.
Stipple engraving is more of an art form with engraved glasses, as it is done entirely by hand with no machines helping you. This allows for a more precise finish. Again, a very hard point must be used — diamond or tungsten carbide. Rather than scraping the surface the stipple engraver will tap single dots into the surface of glass in order to create a white image by having dots close together. Light becomes trapped in the dots to create the image. It’s a true work of art. It’s no drill engraving or copper wheel engraving, but it’s an incredible skill.
